Advanced Design Innovations was engaged by Denton Corker Marshall, to design the operable Pivot Panels for the new Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, Italy.
The design brief was to provide panels that could open and close at the press of a button. This allowed the curator of the pavilion to allow artwork to interact with the inside and outside of the building.
The design challenge was to locate the motors “inside” the panels themselves. When the panels are closed, the building looks like a seamless black box, with no apparent entry points. At the press of a button, 4 panels (that weigh approximately 1 tonne each) open, completely changing the appearance and functionality of the building.
